September 28 is National Drink Beer Day - how will you celebrate? Whether you prefer pale ales, lagers, stouts, or IPAs, this holiday is the perfect excuse to explore them (responsibly, of course).
Spend this festive Wednesday with your friends and celebrate all the different hoppy flavors of their favorite brews.
Fun Facts About Beer
Impress your friends with your beer knowledge. These fun facts could even help you win at your next pub trivia game.
1. Ancient Origins
Did you know that beer is one of the oldest drinks in the world? In 1992, a team of researchers discovered residue of beer brewed around 3500-2900 B.C. They discovered this residue on shards of pottery in Iran.
That’s older than the first known writing, the Sumerian Script (which dates back to about 3400 B.C.).
There’s also proof of ancient beer brewed in Egypt 4,000 years ago. Essentially, beer is an ancient drink that’s been around longer than people think.
2. Not for the Weak
Beer is often mislabeled as weak or for light drinkers, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure, most types of beer contain about 5% ABV (alcohol by volume), but some varieties are much stronger.
In fact, the strongest beer in the world is called Snake Venom, created in 2017 by the Scottish brewery Brewmeister. It has an ABV of 67.5%.
3. Still Standing
Just like brewing beer is an ancient tradition, selling it has historical roots, too. Germany is home to the world’s oldest continuously operating brewery.
Founded in 1040 in Freising, Germany, Benedictine monks first started the Weihenstephan brewery. Today, it’s owned by the German government and is called The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan.
3 Ways for Beer Lovers to Celebrate National Drink Beer Day
Other than pouring yourself a cold one, here are three more ways to celebrate. Grab a friend (or a group of friends) and try all of them out on September 28.
1. Crack Open a Cold One and Keep it Cold
Friends and family make everything more fun. Get everyone together for a cookout, some cornhole, and good music. Don’t forget to bring plenty of insulated can coolers for everyone.
These can coolers are really easy to use. Just twist off the lid, place your can or bottle inside, and twist the lid back on to secure it.
Reduce insulated can coolers are extra durable thanks to the stainless steel design. Since they’re double-insulated, they’ll keep your cans or bottles of brew cold for hours, even if you hold onto your drink the entire time.
Respect the beer and enjoy it cold throughout the entire party - it’s the best way to experience a new brew.
2. Try a Beer From a Different Country or Region
Explore different flavors and brewing techniques from around your state or other countries. Wheat beers are popular in the midwest while darker lagers have a following around the south and east coast.
Buy a few different beers from other countries and pour your own flight. While you’re drinking them, learn about how they’re made - you might just find a new favorite!
Make this experience the theme for a National Drink Beer Day party (the holiday is on a Wednesday, so maybe try out a work Happy Hour if you're looking for something a little more tame). Ask everyone to bring some beers from a different region or country so everyone can taste something new.
This idea is even more enjoyable if you have friends from different states or countries. Ask them to bring a beer from their favorite microbrewery or a beer that represents their country.
You can even make a game of it. Grab four or five completely different types of beer and pour them into unlabeled containers. Then, let everyone do a blind taste test and vote on your favorite!
The blind taste test is a really easy way to explore lagers, ciders, and different ales without feeling like you have to drink an entire can or bottle.
To keep the taste test blind, hide the label in our insulated tumbler.
3. Visit a Local Brewery and Leave a (Big) Tip
Supporting small businesses is the best way to celebrate any niche holiday. On National Drink Beer Day, take the opportunity to visit a local brewery and try their most popular brews.
Don’t forget to leave a big tip and share your experience on social media. Encourage everyone in your group to leave positive reviews on Google, Yelp, or Facebook.
